Structural aid from Munich to Beira that truly arrives
By Prof. Dr. med. Prof. h.c. Florian Heinen (LMU Munich)
With its steady support, the DMG makes possible the direct bridging function from the UCM to LMU Munich. On one side is Prof. Kajal Chhaganlal, MD, PhD, Dean of Teaching and Research at the UCM in Beira, and on the other Prof. Dr. med. Prof. h.c. Florian Heinen, paediatrician and neurologist, department head, faculty council member and senator at LMU in Munich.
In addition to the mutual visits over the past years, the advisory network has been strengthened in a way that works for everyday use. Here is an example: brain wave readings (EEGs) of patients with epilepsy (much more common in Africa than in Europe) can be assessed directly, the availability of medicines evaluated and these used correctly, and diagnoses reviewed and supplemented. Thanks to the DMG, this direct line exists whenever it is needed. With the connections to the faculty and senate of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, structural university-related questions can also be taken up, discussed and answered in a solution-oriented manner.
And both sides learn a great deal from one another about what works and what can work in such different environments. Since academic medicine rests on the three pillars of patient care, research and teaching, teaching too can be continually adapted to changing conditions: through new models in anatomy, through computer-based learning modules, and by equipping courses with analogue and digital materials.
Thanks to Prof. Kajal Chhaganlal, the UCM university achieved its national and international certification really well – a milestone for the future and a confirmation of an institution that was closely tied to the DMG from its very founding and could only be established with its help. A society needs medicine, and good medicine needs the right training – here it is made possible by the DMG. The DMG scholarships for suitable medical students set a good sign of hope.
They send a signal of trust in the next generation; they help in situations that always touch us so deeply: when we see how these individual young people, their joint commitment, their zest for life and their unwavering determination to help – in spite of all obstacles – set strong signs of confidence.
