Catholic University of Mozambique
Faculty of Health Sciences
Since 2003, the Deutsch-Mosambikanische Gesellschaft has supported the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Catholic University of Mozambique in Beira (UCM). The UCM does fundamental work training medical staff in a region still chronically under-resourced in healthcare. While much has changed in the health sector over the past 20 years, little has changed in medical university education. The UCM is a beacon in this regard.
Currently around 2,500 students are enrolled across the programmes of Medicine, Advanced Nursing, Hospital Management, Clinical Analysis, Clinical Psychology, Healthcare, and the internet-based distance Master's in HIV/AIDS and Health Management.
The biggest problem remains the shortage of teaching staff. For many years, on the initiative of the DMG, a German expert team led by Prof. Dr. Florian Heinen has been visiting the faculty. The DMG covers the flight costs of the medical delegation.
