Sponsors wanted for medical students

The pandemic has also caused financial difficulties for the medical students at the UCM. More scholarships for the most talented among them could help.

For 20 years, the German-Mozambican Society has supported the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Catholic University of Mozambique in Beira (UCM). Around 2,200 students are enrolled here. Each year, about 500 students begin their studies in general medicine, nursing, clinical and laboratory analysis, pharmacy, hospital management, psychology or social work. The UCM was founded as a private university. The Faculty of Health Sciences is currently undergoing the accreditation process by the Mozambican government. Around 70 doctors graduate from the UCM each year. The institution thus makes an important contribution to addressing the still considerable lack of medical care for large parts of the population.

But the coronavirus also left deep marks on the students. Many students ran into financial difficulties and were unable to pay their tuition fees. Practical training was interrupted. Gaps in knowledge and skills were unavoidable.

The university would like to be able to award five study scholarships per year (1,000 euros per year), so that it can specifically identify those who are clearly
can support the “best”, who will later take up the founding idea of this African university and carry it forward like a baton.
