Rapid renovation completed on time
Support from Germany arrives at just the right time
For 18 years, the German-Mozambican Society has supported the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Catholic University of Mozambique in Beira (UCM for short). A great deal of money, work and passion has gone into the project. All the more shocking, therefore, was the destruction that Cyclone Idai caused at the UCM and the affiliated São Lucas health centre in spring 2019.
Thanks in part to the extremely rapid and generous support from Germany, the health centre could be rebuilt in record time, so that it reopened as early as June 2019. Within just 2 months, the DMG had received around 320,000 euros in donations for the Beira emergency aid. In view of the coronavirus pandemic, which struck just one year later, we can count ourselves lucky that we were able to help so quickly. The other planned repairs to the storm damage on the UCM buildings could also still be carried out before the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.
After Cyclone Idai had completely destroyed the health facilities in Beira last year, everything could be rebuilt – thanks also to the immense support from Germany.
