Giving scholarships – opening up life prospects

We urgently need scholarships to support the young people

This November, the Munich-based physician Professor Florian Heinen, who has been committed to the DMG and the UCM for many years, once again visited the medical (teaching) facilities on site in Beira. Doctor Florian, as he is called in Mozambique, once more reviewed the structures and curricula of the university for medicine together with the Mozambican physician in charge, Professor Dr. Kajal Chhaganlal, and adapted them through the most intensive collaborative work. There were many conversations with the students. "Listening to where the shoe pinches, understanding what can be done, and outlining joint solutions" – this is how Prof. Heinen describes part of his work in Beira.

In doing so, he repeatedly experiences how much more difficult studying medicine is in Mozambique. „In Mozambique, studies are often torn apart by existential problems,“ he explains. Scholarship programmes, such as those the DMG has granted for the first time in individual cases over the past two years, can provide a remedy here.

When the most pressing financial problems are resolved through scholarships, an environment can be created in which learning becomes possible at all. For such an environment is needed in order to successfully complete the demanding course of study. “The young people have to examine patients together every day, work through teaching cases together, discuss in groups and present in front of the lecturers. All of this requires time and concentration. Only in this way can they gradually develop their own skills, in order later to help save lives and stand up for others,” reports Prof. Heinen.

Here you can help, directly and tangibly! Become a sponsor for a student. In doing so, you create a life-changing future for a young person – and also for medically underserved Mozambique.
